If you’ve recently bought yourself a mattress (from us, we hope), you’ll need to practise some proper mattress care to make sure it lasts for as long as possible.
If you look after it with the right mattress care, your mattress can last for up to a decade and still maintain the same level of comfort from the first day it arrived on your doorstep. On the other hand, if you don’t look after your mattress it won’t last nearly as long as it’s designed to; meaning you’ll be buying another before you need to.
With sleep being such a precious part of our everyday routine, many of us will take into careful consideration the kind of mattress we buy. After all, you wouldn’t want to buy one that doesn’t allow you to wake up naturally refreshed and ready for the day ahead. In order to ensure that your mattress is kept in good condition, there are a few quick and simple tricks that you can look into when it comes to taking care of it; here are a few of our favourites.
Mattress Care Tip 1: Invest in a mattress protector
As a way of protecting your mattresses’ longevity, a mattress protector is a worthy investment. Not only does this help safeguard the materials inside the mattress, it can also reduce the number of allergens that build up. Understandably, mattress protectors are a popular part of so many people’s bedding collections, especially as there are many cost-effective options on the market.
If you’re considering buying one as an extra layer of protection, we recommend that you opt for one that is made of natural materials and uses wool or other natural fillings as this will allow your mattress to breathe.
Mattress Care Tip 2: Wash your bed linen regularly
When you sleep, your body takes the time to recharge. However, it’s also the time where it sheds oils, dead skin cells, and sweat. We know that may not be the most pleasant of things to think about, but changing your bed linen on a regular basis can be beneficial not only to you but to your mattress too, as skin cells can work their way into it and eventually lead to dust mites ruining your mattress altogether.
To make sure you make the most of your mattresses’ life-span, it’s recommended that you change your bed linen every 1–2 weeks. If you have a mattress protector, this should help keep bacteria from getting into your mattress, but even this will need to be cleaned occasionally.
Mattress Care Tip 3: Immediately unwrap your mattress after it’s been delivered
Probably not the most well-known way of maintaining the quality of your mattress, but unwrapping your mattress as soon as it’s been delivered allows the springs and fillings to get back to their right size and shape straight away. This reinforces the mattresses’ breathability by getting it out of a confined space and out in the air. Which, if you take a look at our previous post, is one of the main benefits of a natural wool mattress.
Mattress Care Tip 4: Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guide
No matter what kind of mattress you decide to buy, it’s always a good idea to take care of your mattress based on the manufacturer’s care guide. Understandably, you may think that one guide should suit all mattresses, but as they are all made differently, each mattress will have a better suited method of caring for it.
Because we use natural materials and a chemical-free sleep surface at Herdysleep we, too, have our own recommendations for looking after our mattresses:
Stay clear of vacuuming your mattress as this can dislodge natural fillings, making the sleep pad uneven;
For spillages, a simple dab of warm soapy water should be enough to keep the sleep surface clean, helping your mattress to stay in top condition for longer.
Of course, every mattress maker uses different materials and methods to build their mattresses, so keeping your mattress’ care booklet somewhere in your home is always worthwhile; especially for those accidental spills.
Mattress Care Tip 5: Rotate your mattress to help it settle
A popular way of making sure your mattress stays in the best shape possible is to rotate it every few months to help it settle. As mentioned in the previous point, this can depend on what type of mattress you have, but no matter what kind of material it’s made from, all mattresses benefit from rotating them once in a while. This allows heavily worn areas to recover, and distributes wear more evenly so it’s less likely to sag or have body indentations appear over time.
While a herdysleep mattress doesn’t necessarily need to be rotated too frequently due to its layered pocket springs, we do believe that rotating it in the first few months will help settle the fillings evenly. After that however, you just need to rotate it twice a year to keep it in shape. As a way to keep on top of this 6-month change, we recommend doing this when the clocks go forward in spring and backwards in autumn.
There are many things to bear in mind when keeping your mattress in the best shape possible, but these tips should help sustain the quality of it so you can enjoy a good night’s sleep, year after year.
